Columbia University Medical Center - Assistant Vice President of Media Relations and Public Affairs

The Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) and the College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) seek a dynamic and experienced communications professional to lead a highly motivated, talented, and dedicated media relations staff as the next Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Media Relations and Public Affairs. The AVP will serve as the primary spokesperson for CUMC and P&S, spearhead crisis communication, and collaborate both internally and externally on the creation and dissemination of all press releases and strategic communications.

Situated on a 20-acre campus in Northern Manhattan, CUMC is home to the College of Physicians and Surgeons, College of Dental Medicine, School of Nursing, and the Mailman School of Public Health, as well as the biomedical departments of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and allied research centers and institutions. CUMC's major teaching hospital affiliates are New York-Presbyterian Hospital and the New York State Psychiatric Institute, both of which share the CUMC campus. Accounting for roughly half of Columbia University's nearly $3 billion annual budget, CUMC provides global leadership in scientific research, health and medical education, and patient care.

The AVP reports to the Chief Operating Officer of CUMC with a dotted line report to the Executive Vice President of Columbia University's Office of Communications and Public Affairs. While each individual school at CUMC has its own communications office, the AVP will work closely within CUMC on shared content and responses to media inquiries. Through this deep collaboration, the AVP will be expected to craft media strategies that effectively utilize traditional and new media to reach both broad and targeted audiences; disseminate information to internal and external constituencies such that the many accomplishments of CUMC are consistently recognized and reinforced; lead CUMC during times of crisis management; and strengthen communication and relationships internally, within CUMC and externally, utilizing media contacts and networks.

This is a unique opportunity for an accomplished individual to provide strategic communications leadership in an academic health center which is internationally recognized for its contributions to the creation of new knowledge and therapies to improve health in individuals and populations across the world.

Inquiries, nominations, and/or applications (including a curriculum vitae and a letter of interest) should be directed in confidence to:
