About the role:

The Communications Director will be a senior leader on our North America team, crafting our brand building strategies through high-impact media campaigning and media relations and the development of engaging content (videos, blog posts, interviews, etc.) that tells the story of change-making on the platform. You'll amplify stories of everyday people trying to create change in the world, elevate the ability of individuals to shape society for the better, and inspire millions to believe in their own potential. Youll make a huge impact as you help millions of people start and successfully run their own campaigns for positive social change.

Here's what you'll do as part of our team:
Media Campaigning:
Oversee national media outreach on the grassroots campaigns that develop daily on
Design and execute both rapid-response and long-term social change advocacy campaigns with the potential for explosive growth and victories in partnership with other stakeholders.
Identify and pitch compelling stories to top-tier and influential media outlets.
Provide media training and support to petition starters and staff before and during media appearances and events.
Collaborate with global teams on cross-country campaigns and media opportunities.

Media Relations:
Help the team create and implement a relationship management system that strengthens our ties with the most important outlets and influential media-makers in the country.
Represent at important media meetings and events and at interviews, both on- and off-the-record.

Social Media and Content Creation:
Help build its social media reach and influence by developing and managing the creation of engaging social content, and thinking through ways our social media channels can be leveraged for impact on the campaigns started on the platform.
Develop original content (e.g. videos, news stories, infographics and data stories, interview series, etc.) for external audiences and for users about campaign developments, petition starter stories, trending issues, victories, and more.

Devise and implement comprehensive and effective strategies for the continued growth of the brand in the US and Canada using the compelling stories of success, people power, and impact on the site.
Develop an outreach strategy that establishes as the leading tech and social change platform for people-powered impact in North America.
Help develop launch materials for and provide feedback on newly developed tools and features on the platform.
Assess and mitigate communications and brand risk and maintain the reputation of the brand in North America.

Serve as a manager for North American communication team members, and be part of a team of 12 campaigns, communications, marketing, and email experts on the broader North American team.
Work with vendors to ensure the team has effective and reliable databases, tools, and resources for public relations work.
Manage North American communications team budget.

The ideal candidate will have:
A deep understanding of campaigning and a commitment to our mission of empowering people to win campaigns on critical issues
Exceptional writing, editing and public speaking skills.
Experience developing deep relationships with top-tier and influential media.
Experience managing individuals and/or teams (strongly preferred).
Great organizational and project management skills.
A passion for using media and technology to change the world, and the ability to get other people fired up about the possibilities of people-powered change.
A track record of good judgment, especially in rapid-response situations.
Innovative ideas on how to use communications, media and storytelling to win local, national and international campaigns - and a willingness to take risks, to fail, and to adapt.
Insightful understanding of messaging and framing, and the judgment to repeatedly find the right methods and ways to engage users, decision-makers, journalists and other stakeholders.
You should enjoy working in an online environment, using social media and collaborating using online tools, as well as working virtually with colleagues around the country and world.
A willingness to take risks and thrive in uncertainty -- especially when it comes to helping the team and petition starters drive campaigns forward.
